Cross Country

Holger Majorahn

May 2015

In 2014 Holger Majorahn travelled to western Canada resulting in a body of work entitled "Cross Country". In these crisp and colourful paintings, the Canadian prairies and the mountains beyond come to life: vibrant and glowing with the artist's clear appreciation.

Majorahn's passion for the natural world bursts forth in a bold and largely cheerful palette. Expressed in a fearless use of colour reminiscent of the Group of Seven, his enthusiasm for his subject has infused these painting with such energy that they virtually glow. Especially fascinated by the vast majesty of the mountains and the intricacy of trees, Majorahn's paintings express an “appreciation and reverence for the power of creation in this world.” The mountains display an ability to hold and reflect light, while the trees seem to stand in the place of observers, silently doing the important and beautiful work of simply breathing.

Holger Majorahn immigrated to Canada from Germany and pursued a career as designer, illustrator and art director. He now enjoys life as a full-time artist and is also one of three minds behind ARTSONTEN in Flesherton, Ontario. This artist-run gallery and boutique showcases the work of local artists, including Majorahn's own paintings.
