Katherine Knight is nationally recognized for her photo-based work and installations. She has been an artist in residence at United Media Arts since December, creating a new body of work about snow. Since her arrival in Durham she conducted a workshop at the Gallery, a lecture at the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery and an artist talk at Grey Highland Secondary School in Flesherton. She will speak about her work at the opening on January 12 at 3:30.

Katherine Knight's work often explores notions of memory, narrative, will and consequence while referencing landscape and geography.
Aerostat, a portrait of air and wind, reflects Knight's continued interest in landscape and weather related events. This body of work explores both the metaphoric implications of wind while documenting its physical impact on the world.

"Wind has no independent material presence. Rather wind is marked by the consequences of its actions. Both our imaginary and physical worlds record wind's triumphs and tragedies. Yet, wind itself is elusive. It cannot be photographed, seen, heard or measured without the objects it acts upon. It does not smell or taste other than by the grace of what it carries or hosts. Touch is singular among the senses enacted by wind. The wind's immaterial nature heightens its metaphorical sustainability. Of all the elements, wind parallels most closely the daily and everyday activities of our minds. To begin, sustain and then cease is a ubiquitous cycle repeated in our conversations, emotions and actions."
