David Rankine
April 2002
David Rankine's intricate and colourful paintings are inspired by early Medieval manuscript art, especially the 8th century Book of Kells. With a Scottish background and a solid grounding in Celtic music and dance, David is fascinated by the intricate patterning, rhythms and sense of fluid circular movement displayed in these art forms.
Through the use of traditional motifs combined with modern realist painting techniques, David creates works which provide the viewer with an alternate view of reality, a back and forth between control and chaos, clarity and distortion. Each work explores the connection between historical style and contemporary art sensibilities.
Educated at Toronto's York University, David now lives and creates in the village of Wareham in Grey County, Ontario.
