A Selection in Black and White and Color 1965 to the Present

Ron Shuebrook

March 2006

The Gallery is very pleased to be presenting the work of this major artist and tireless champion, Ron Shuebrook. Ron’s deep engagement with the national and international art world has not obscured his commitment to local practice and grassroots art communities. It is in this spirit that we welcome Ron Shuebrook and invite you to join us during this exhibition.

This exhibition is comprised mainly of Ron Shuebrook's black and white drawings, paintings, and wall constructions which he has produced over the past four decades. Beginning with his distilled responses in ink on paper to observed landscapes, figures, and interiors from 1965 and continuing to his large-scale metaphoric compositions in acrylic on canvas of recent years, this selection examines his sustained investigations into the expressive and critical possibilities of abstraction. Throughout his career, Shuebrook has created objects of contemplation that embody diverse meanings and motivations through the rigorous manipulation and integration of various physical materials and perceptual structures. His engaged speculations are products of pre-meditation and purposeful improvisation. Although his art is clearly informed by the diverse traditions and conventions of early and mid-twentieth century modernisms, he has sought to make a body of personally authentic work that is intellectually serious and psychologically evocative, and provides an experiential immediacy.
