Fatima Garzan

November 2014

Fatima Garzan’s inspiring works of art blend East and West, ancient and contemporary. Her art practice is rooted in her upbringing in Iran and informed by her arts education in Canada. Rich in colour and texture, Garzan’s paintings and prints reflect the differences of place and culture, the intangible sense of belonging to anywhere and anytime, and the joy of being in the moment.

Painting without any predetermined concept or source of imagery, Garzan freely explores the materiality of the paint and its transformative potential. For Garzan the process of repetition and patterning gives shape and form to her memories, thoughts, and imagination, and is as much a structure of the mind as it is a physical entity that evokes a heightened awareness of our existence. Her fluid painting style often results in kaleidoscopic circular images which bring to mind the cross-cultural patterns of mandalas people have used in many religious traditions.

Garzan’s attention to the material aspect of the painting process and her take on perception and consciousness induces a sensory experience in the viewer and creates a portal for meditative contemplation.

Fatima Garzan was born in Tehran, Iran and immigrated to Canada in 1992. Fatima has a BA in Economics and studied Fine Arts at the University of Waterloo where she received her Honours Bachelor of Arts in painting and printmaking in 2005. Her continued education includes courses and workshops at Open Studio in Toronto and Centre3 for print and media arts in Hamilton. She has exhibited in Canada and Iran. Her work has been exhibited widely and can be found in private collections as well as the City of Kitchener and the Art Bank, amongst others. Garzan is one of the founding members of BOX, a regional art show showcasing local and emerging artists in the Waterloo Region.
