UNFOLDING STORIES
Supria Karmakar
July 2014
Vibrant colours and intriguing textures create first impressions that draw people to Supria Karmakar’s beautiful work. Her creative process encompasses detailed and often elaborate surface manipulation through the layering of wax and colours, and the adding of collage materials to unfold stories that contain depth and intrigue. Her collage elements include found objects, antique findings, cut-outs from magazines or newsprint, and more.
It is those processes Karmakar so masterfully applies to her captivating paintings which are inspired by nature, the art of the written word, music that reaches the soul, and intersect themes of personal and universal narratives.
Raised in England and of East Indian heritage, award-winning artist Supria Karmakar currently lives in Elora, Ontario. She works as a full-time artist and facilitator of encaustic collage and altered book workshops.
