Roslyn Levin
July 2013
Meaning ink (sumi) and picture (e), Sumi-e is an ancient form of painting which originated in China and then moved to Japan, and requires a deceptively simple and dynamic image with a minimum of pigment and strokes.
In Levin’s hands, the technique results in fresh,
minimal depictions of botanicals, animals especially horses), human figures and landscapes. The title of this exhibition illustrates the fluid nature of the medium, the flowing quality of the artwork, and the permeable connection between artist, subject and action required to create the delicate images.
Levin lives in Orangeville and has been practicing
this form of art making for many years. She has been honoured with several awards, among them one of the Grand Prizes in the 5th Annual Japanese Calligraphy Competition in Canada.
